The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a curious offering from Samsung, a company that has been at the forefront of folding technology. Having pioneered the book-style foldable design, Samsung has now introduced a squat, passport-like shape that is reminiscent of the Blackberry. This new design is certainly unique, but is it a step too far? In my opinion, the Fold 8's passport shape is a compromise that doesn't quite work. When closed, the device is short and wide, making it difficult to use one-handed and the keyboard takes up a significant portion of the screen. This makes it a less-than-ideal phone experience. However, when opened, the device reveals a beautiful 7.6-inch OLED display that is crisp, smooth, and super-bright. This makes it easy to see in direct sunlight, and the 4:3 ratio is well-suited for video viewing. The tablet screen is also great for multitasking, with plenty of processing power and surprisingly good battery life. The Fold 8 has the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and memory as Samsung's top S26 Ultra, making it one of the fastest Android phones available. The software is also excellent, with Samsung's One UI 9 providing multiple split-windowing configurations and AI tools that enhance the user experience. However, the Fold 8's camera is a disappointment, with only two cameras on the back and no telephoto option. This is a significant drawback for a device of this price point. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 is a mixed bag. While it has some impressive features, such as its powerful performance and excellent software, the passport shape and camera limitations make it a less-than-ideal choice for many users. Personally, I think that Samsung should have stuck with the book-style design that has proven to be successful over the years. What makes this particularly fascinating is the idea of a phone and tablet in one, but the execution could have been better. From my perspective, the Fold 8 is a step too far, and I would recommend considering other options before making a purchase.
